CDN acquired specialist Akamai cloud storage Ondat tech provider in a surprising move to empower its own Connected Cloud offer, launched just a few days ago.
Details of the London-based company’s takeover have not been disclosed, and the acquisition is expected to close by the end of March 2023.
Ondate competes with such Portworx (now part Clean storage) and OpenEBS in the hot market of software-defined, cloud-native storage Kubernetes and is application, infrastructure and orchestration independent.

It has a tiered offer with a free community that provides unlimited clusters, unlimited nodes and 1 TB capacity per cluster, up to an enterprise offer with unlimited cloud storage capacity, 24/7 support and a dedicated account manager for only $750 per node per year for a virtual machine (not systemless).
Akamai has grown from one of the largest CDNs in the world to an entity that aspires to “power and protect lives online” and interacts with billions of end users daily through a backbone that has a presence in over 130 countries in nearly 4,200 locations.
Her acquisition hosting business Linodin March 2022, expanded Akamai’s global footprint, giving it the tools it needs to compete on an equal footing with its archrival CloudFlare as well as hyperscalers that are increasingly expanding their own offerings to compete with traditional CDNs.
Its global reach means that tasks can be transparently performed closer to where they are needed, regardless of location. It is also aggressively increasing the number of products and services it offers, currently surpassing 82 at the time of writing.
Apart from cloud hosting AND VPSAkamai offers ZTNA services, Cloud Firewall, DNS management, Cloud backup AND DDoS protection among others. It recently announced a 50% reduction in the price of excess egress traffic (to 1 PB per month), which it sees as one of the biggest problems for its customers (and the rest of the cloud computing industry).
