By jumping on the AI train, Bold introduces its own AI-powered search function into its web browser called Summarizer – similar to what Microsoft recently did with Bing.
The new feature “provides concise and factual answers at the top of Brave Search results.” For example, if you want to know about a chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio, The summary will be created (opens in a new tab) a summary of the event in one paragraph along with several sources to read. Unlike Microsoft, which only uses ChatGPT for the Bing chatbot, Summarizer uses three internal large language models, or LLMs for short, based on trained versions of the BART and DeBERT AI models to create snippets of search results.
AI retraining
To simplify the technology behind them, BART (opens in a new tab) AND DEBERT (opens in a new tab) they are generative AI like typing ChatGPT which have been specially trained to take into account word positioning and context, so that the output text is well read. Brave took these models and trained them using their own data from the search results to develop the Summarizer.
As announced, the training of the Summarizer regiment is a three-stage process. First, Brave taught the LLM to prioritize answering the questions they ask. The company then used “null classifiers” to categorize the results so that the information provided was relevant. The final step helps the models rewrite the code snippet to be more consistent. The result is an accurate answer written concisely with multiple sources included.
Please note that this feature is still in its early stages. Brave says Summarizer only uses about 17 percent of search terms to formulate responses, but there are plans to increase that number even more for better paragraphs. Its accuracy also needs some work. The company admits that the Summarizer can cause what it calls “hallucinations,” which are unrelated bits mixed with results. In addition, there is a possibility that the function will insert some “false or offensive text” into the answer.
Availability
Summarizer is currently available to all Brave Search users on desktop and mobile except Bold search goggles (opens in a new tab). There it is turned off. You can turn it off at any time by going to your browser’s settings menu. So is the company asking users for feedback (opens in a new tab) about how it can improve the tool.
We tried the Summarizer ourselves, and while it’s cool, it needs some work. Not all search results will give you a snippet because it depends on what you’re asking as well as what news topics are circulating. For example, a chemical spill in eastern Palestine, Ohio, is a hot topic right now, so Summarizer works well there. However, when we asked about the recent cooling down in Los Angeles and what’s going on with some video game developers, we either didn’t get a summary or outdated information. But the latter came with the sources, so at least it was accurate. Still better than having ChatGPT triggers a tantrum or lie to your face.
