One of the improvements coming in 2023 with the iPhone 15 could be better battery life, with Apple’s chosen chip maker TSMC (Taiwanese semiconductor company) promising increased performance with a new generation of silicon.
according to Bloomberg (opens in a new tab)TSMC announced the move to chips made using a 3-nanometer manufacturing process, a leap from the current 5-nanometer process. Generally, the lower the number, the more closely the processor components will be packed.
Most importantly, TSMC claims that their new chips will use around 35% less power as well as be faster in terms of performance. This should come with improved battery life for devices from TSMC partners – including Apple’s iPhone 14 successor.
Chips with everything
There are some caveats here: Apple designs the Bionic processors found in the iPhone, so it may choose to design the improvements that 3nm offers in a different way rather than maximizing energy efficiency.
However, all indications are that the A17 Bionic chip – widely expected to debut in the next round of iPhones – will offer better performance without as much power consumption. TSMC has plenty of time to perfect its manufacturing process before it starts producing the iPhone 15s.
However, if Apple adheres to this year’s plan, only the 2023 iPhone Pro models will receive the new silicon. The standard iPhone 15 and the successor iPhone 14 Plus, if there is one, will most likely get the A16 chipset.
Analysis: Rumors are gaining momentum
Rumors about the iPhone 15 – like the one above – have already begun to appear, and their number will only grow as 2023 progresses. No other phone gets as much attention and anticipation as Apple’s flagship, even if it doesn’t get massive year-over-year updates.
One of the improvements that could come to the iPhone 15 series is a “state-of-the-art” camera sensor that is better at capturing photos and videos in harsh environments. Considering that the cameras on the iPhone are already very good, this sounds promising.
Some iPhone 15 models were also rumored to feature solid-state power and volume buttons. It’s a rumor that’s been circulating for years, but it looks like 2023 could be the year it happens.
It is not yet clear how many iPhone 15 devices we will get or what they will be called. The focus on improvements is expected to once again be on the Pro models, and there has been speculation that Apple is working on a new super-powerful, super-expensive iPhone 15 Ultra.
